DESCRIPTION:LED (light emitting diode) technology is developing rapidly as
a general light source and being made more available for the green industr
 y. In this overview Dan McAllister\, owner of Nite Image\, Inc. and Landsc
ape Institute faculty member\, will discuss the origins of LED lighting an
d what it actually is\, as well as the growth pattern of LED usage. Opport
unities and advantages of using LED as a light source\, performance compar
isons to other types of lighting\, will also be addressed. LED controllers
\, dimming\, and exterior applications will be reviewed\,to give the parti
cipant a better understanding of this “green” source of light energy. A ha
nds on demonstration will be done at the end of the talk—showing LED fixtu
re types. Mr. McAllister will be teaching lighting design at the Institute
in the Spring and Summer of 2009. This lecture will take place at New Eng

DESCRIPTION:Hunnewell Building\, Arnold Arboretum--125 Arborway\, Jamaica P
 lain\, MA 02130\n\nNative vs. non-native is a hot topic in horticultural c
ircles. There are plenty of good reasons to choose native plants: they’re
 essential to the lifecycle of native birds\, insects\, and other animals\;
they’re adapted to the regional climate\; and many are highly ornamental
as well. But the issue isn’t really as simple as that. For starters\, how
do we even define “native”? And are native plants really the best choice i
n landscapes that have been so completely human-altered that there’s nothi
ng “native” about them? Though horticulturist Nancy Rose can’t resolve all
the questions\, she will identify some of the arguments and reasons for “
going native” and then suggest appropriate trees and shrubs. She will spea
k about plant characteristics\, cultural requirements\, and site condition
s that should be considered in the selection – including examples of situa
tions where a native plant isn’t necessarily the best choice
